Refund deadlines

Is the IRS Holding a Refund for You? The Clock Is Running.

According to the IRS, if you are due a refund for withholding or estimated taxes, you must file your return to claim it within 3 years of the return due date. After that, the refund is generally lost. For many people who have not filed, the 2023 refund window closes on April 15, 2027.

Why File Your Past-Due Tax Returns Now?

Every month you wait can make it more expensive and harder to fix. Here is what the IRS says happens when a return is not filed.

Failure-to-file penalty

If you owe tax, the IRS failure-to-file penalty is 5% of the unpaid tax for each month or part of a month the return is late, up to 25%.

Failure-to-pay penalty and interest

Unpaid tax also carries a failure-to-pay penalty of 0.5% per month, plus interest, until the balance is paid.

Minimum penalty after 60 days

For returns due in 2025 that are more than 60 days late, the minimum penalty is $510 or 100% of the tax owed, whichever is less.

The IRS may file for you

If you do not file, the IRS may file a substitute return for you, which might not give you credit for deductions and exemptions you are entitled to.

Refunds expire

Refunds you may be owed can only be claimed within 3 years of the return due date. After that, the money is generally lost.

Loans, benefits and peace of mind

Missing returns can hold up mortgages, loans and future refunds. Getting current puts you back in good standing and ends the stress of IRS letters.

The sooner you file, the less you pay in penalties. Start with a consultation today.
